About us
The current owner is descended from Agnes Hinchlif and Richardus Crosland of Hinchliffe Mill and Holmbridge, who married in 1602. Nearby South Crosland, Crosland Moor, and Crosland Hall were all named for the Crosland family; South Crosland and North Crosland (which no longer exists) were mentioned in the Domesday Book. The names are Anglo-Saxon, and are common locally, having originated right here in the area. Meanwhile the Hinchlif family gave their name to the hamlet adjoining Holmbridge to the east. Hinch-Cliff in 7th Century Old English means steep cliff ('henge'/steep or hanging; 'clif'/cliff or rock).
